Throw away your old bunsens
Integra Biosciences of Chur, Switzerland, has introduced the Fireboy plus mobile bunsen burner. The system, measuring 70 x 90 x 180 mm, is operated from a gas cartridge and powered from a rechargeable battery. Gas ignition is rapid and safe, with an infrared sensor that provides non-touch ignition of the gas supply. A foot-activated switch automatically turns off five minutes after the last activation, minimising the consumption of oxygen and operating environment heat.

Lighting for lab clean rooms 
The Greenstock Lamp Company, Lincoln, UK, has launched super long-life Aura Protector fluorescent tubes, ideal for lighting clean rooms in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries. The tubes are encapsulated in a high-quality transparent FEP plastic film to contain the glass if, for any reason, a breakage occurs. The FEP coating provides protection from -40?C to +150?C and suffers no UV degradation.

Drug analysis in the cold 
Polymer Laboratories, of Church Stretton, UK, has launched the PL-ELS 2100 Ice (integrated cooled evaporator) for improved analysis of non-UV absorbing, low molecular weight semi-volatile pharmaceutical compounds at low temperatures. The PL-ELS 2100 Ice operates at temperatures down to 10°C. The detector applies a stream of dry nitrogen during the evaporation step to lower the temperature and to reduce the relative humidity of the surroundings. This provides high sensitivity detection of semi-volatile compounds and a more universal response across all.

Cell analysis 
Guava Technologies of Hayward, California, US, has introduced Express Cell Surface Antibodies, a new line of antibody reagents for cytometry, designed to identify subsets of haematopoietic-derived cells by their patterns of protein expression. The antibodies are direct conjugates to one of three fluorescent dyes, eliminating the need for secondary staining and wash steps in the staining protocol.

Introducing gas 
Thermo Electron Corporation of Waltham, Massachusetts, US, has launched the semi-automatic multiple injection EGM II gas introduction module which achieves enhanced accuracy of total chlorine, total sulfur and total nitrogen analyses; the module switches from gas to liquefied gas at the flick of a switch. For both gas and liquefied gas applications, the sample loop can be filled and injected automatically up to 99 times in a single measurement cycle. The EGM II Is equipped with pressure and temperature regulators ensuring reproducible injection volumes for high accuracy analysis.

Weighing with extreme precision 
Sartorius of Hong Kong, China, has introduced four new precision balances. The LE1003S will measure heavy samples weighing up to 1010 g with 1 mg readability. The LE1003P is intended for heavy tare containers, with a continuous fine range of 500g. The balance has a large all-glass draught shield chamber. The LE2202S-DS and LE5202S-DS are designed for places exposed to the relatively strong air currents that can be found under laboratory fume hoods, in glove boxes and laminar-flow systems. Both balances are also supplied with all-glass draught shields.

Robotic liquid handling 
Caliper Life Sciences of Hopkinton, Massachusetts, US, has launched the Sciclone i1000 high volume liquid handling workstation. The exclusive multi-MEMS technology incorporated in the product provides accurate, independent control of 96 single-channel pipetting heads for high volume applications. Each of its independently pipetting heads is capable of detecting microplate well liquid levels and measuring actual pipetted liquid volumes, regardless of temperature or viscosity.

Testing night vision 
Glen Spectra of Stanmore, UK, has introduced the OL770-NVS night vision display test and measurement system from Optronic Laboratories. A multichannel CCD detector allows all the relevant wavelengths to be measured simultaneously rather than sequentially as in traditional instruments, reducing measurement times from tens of minutes down to a few seconds. The OL770-NVS provides fast measurements of spectral radiance, luminance, chromaticity, NVISa, NVISb, and provides pass/fail results according to the US military standard MIL-STD-3009.
