E-Alerts Service - FAQ

What types of E-Alerts are available?

  • We offer table of contents alerts for all RSC journals. By subscribing to this service, you will receive table of contents by email when a new journal issue is published online.
  • We also offer an E-Alert for the RSC eBook Collection. Sent monthly, this alert lists all of the books currently included in the Collection.
  • Alerts are available for select RSC current awareness titles, which notify subscribers when a new collection of records is available online.

How do I sign up to receive E-Alerts?

  1. Enter your email address on the simple sign-up form and select which alert(s) you wish to receive.
  2. You will receive an automated message from our website for each journal or other product you select. Please reply to this message within 48 hours in order to confirm your subscription.
  3. You will immediately receive a confirmation email saying "member joined list".
  4. Tables of contents for your chosen journal(s) will be sent to you when a new issue appears online, starting with the next available issue. Alternatively, if you have signed up for the eBook Collection alert or for a current awareness product alert, you will receive a monthly email notification indicating that new records have been added.

I received an error message - what does it mean?

  • Error: No command to confirm, possibly accept too late or no longer required: Possible reasons are
    • You already replied to the message
    • Your reply was received too late (after 48 hours)
    • You replied from a different email address than the one signed up to the list (i.e., message was forwarded)
  • Error: Join [xxxx] failed : Command unconfirmed in 48 hours: You did not reply at all.
  • Error: Command not processed - unmatched UDIL: Your reply was not recognised. Please try again, ensuring that the subject line remains unchanged.

I didn't receive any confirmation messages. Why?

You might already subscribe to the E-Alert. If in doubt, please contact us.

I received a confirmation message but I haven't received any alerts yet?

If you subscribed to receive alerts from Integrative Biology or Metallomics, you will receive your first alert in January 2009 when the first issue of these new journals is published. If you subscribed to any other alerting service, you might not have received any E-Alerts yet because a new issue has not been published online since your registration for the alert was confirmed. If you believe an issue has been published online but that you did not receive an alert, please contact us.

Can I change the frequency of the E-Alerts I receive?

Not yet. Currently the frequency of the alert corresponds to the frequency of the publication.

Can I select the format?

Alerts are sent in a format that is compatible for readers who prefer plain text (ASCII) or html. The html format E-Alerts for journal table of contents is fully linked to abstracts. Journal subscribers can access full text from the abstract page. If you don't have access to our journals via a subscription, you can purchase individual papers using our pay-per-view service.

Can I be alerted when Advance Articles are published?

Currently we use RSS feeds to deliver you the latest information about Advance Articles published in RSC journals. iGoogle gadgets are available, which deliver RSS feeds from RSC journals to your personalised Google page. We have also released a gadget that allows you to search RSC Advance Articles from your iGoogle page. Further details are available on our RSS Feeds page.

Can I check to see which E-Alerts I subscribe to?

Not yet, but if you contact us we are happy to check for you and let you know.

How do I cancel an E-Alerts service?
