Journals Search Help

Help

All journal articles published by the RSC since 1841 are indexed in this search engine.

Search Features

  • Search within a range of years
  • Select from one or from multiple journal titles
  • Boolean searching (using AND, OR, NOT and NEAR) within the authors field
  • In text fields require a specific term by prefixing it with + (plus) and exclude a specific term by prefixing it with - (minus) e.g. fuel -hydrocarbons +cell
Known problems:
  • The full text of the articles has been captured using OCR so a search on the General (full text) field will not always return accurate results
  • There is no way to control the relevance of results returned but the most relevant results are always returned first. A version that provides the option to only return those results that match all terms (100% match) is currently in development.

Help on selecting and deselecting journal groups

Each journal group entry selected in the search will appear highlighted when chosen.
The method used to select multiple entries depends upon the kind of computer you use:

All users:

hold down the Shift key to select a contiguous range of entries.

Windows users:

To select non-contiguous entries hold down the Ctrl key and click on each entry to be selected.
To deselect an entry, hold down the Ctrl key and click on the highlighted entry.

Macintosh users

To select non-contiguous entries hold down the Command Key (usually next to the spacebar and signified by a cloverleaf, apple and/or the word "Alt") and click on each entry to be selected.
To deselect an entry, hold down the Command Key and click on the highlighted entry.

(NOTE: In some browsers if the Command Key doesn't work as described, try using the CTRL key instead.)

Unix users

Unix users can simply click entries. To deselect an entry, simply click it again.

Journal Group selection

Some journal group titles include several individual Journal titles.
For example, the group title 'Chemical Communications' includes: 'Chemical Communications', 'Journal of the Chemical Society, Chemical Communications' and 'Chemical Communications (London)'.

Years selection

Constrain the search to material printed between and including the selected years. When the search screen is first loaded or the 'Reset Form' option is selected, the full range of years available is selected.
Check the 'Restrict to Archive' check box to restrict the search to archive articles. (Articles published between 1841 and 1996.) Unchecking this box returns the year selection boxes to their default values (covering all years.)

Articles selection

Selecting Advance Articles from this drop down list will restrict the search to those articles that are available ahead of the print version.

Article Title field

Terms entered here are searched against the title of the article.

Authors field

The Boolean operators 'AND', 'OR, 'NOT' and 'NEAR' (not case-sensitive) can be entered in this search field. If a non-Boolean term is entered it is converted to a Boolan 'OR' term. So a search on 'Smith Jones' is converted to the Boolean search 'Smith or Jones'.

Search within Abstract

Enter terms here to be searched against the abstract of the article. (This field is only searchable on those articles that contain an abstract and that were published after 1966.)

Search within the Full Text

Enter terms here to be searched against the full text (all text) of the article. Note that the full text of articles prior to 1997 has been captured using Optical Character Recognition. This process is prone to error, so a search on this field will not always return accurate results.

'Improve' function

To use the improve function, first select (using the square 'tick' box) those result documents containing the most relevant terms to your search. Then select the 'Improve' button to execute a search based on terms that will be extracted from the selected documents. The results should contain content similar to the selected documents
