Chemical Communications

Urgent high quality communications from across the chemical sciences.

Seiji Shinkai Commemorative Issue

This issue is to commemorate Seiji Shinkai's 65th birthday and celebrates his contribution to chemistry.

Authors from all over the world were invited to contribute to this issue by Dr Tony James, from the University of Bath in the UK.

All the contributions have been published in regular issues of ChemCommOrganic and Biomolecular Chemistry, the New Journal of ChemistryCrystEngComm and Analyst and then collated into this high quality issue for presentation at the 4th International Symposium on Macrocyclic and Supramolecular Chemistry (21st - 25th June), in Maastricht, Netherlands.

Seiji Shinkai
Professor Seiji Shinkai retired from Kyushu University in March, 2008.  He is now serving as Professor of Sojo University in Kumamoto City and President of the Institute of Systems, Information Technologies and Nanotechnologies (ISIT) in Fukuoka City.

He was born in 1944 in Fukuoka, Japan, and received his Ph.D. in 1972 from Kyushu University. After postdoctoral work with Thomas C. Bruice at the University of California, Santa Barbara he joined Kyushu University in 1974 and became a full professor there in 1988.

He directed the Shinkai Chemirecognics (1990-1995), Chemotransfiguration (1997-2001) and SORST (2002-2007) projects and was leader of the COE projects entitled "Design and Control of Advanced Molecular Assembly Systems" (1998-2002) and "Functional Innovation of Molecular Informatics" (2002-2007).

His research interests include host-guest chemistry, molecular recognition, sugar sensing, allosteric functions, organogels, sol-gel transcription and polysaccharide-polynucleotide interactions. He is particularly well-known for his "design" of a molecular machine using photoresponsive crown ethers. He has 938 publications up to the end of 2008 including many in RSC journals, for example 97 Chemical Communications. He also has a h-index of 80 (May 1st 2009).
