New journal announced: Integrative Biology

12 June 2008

It was announced today that a new journal, Integrative Biology: Quantitative biosciences from nano to macro, will be launched in January 2009 by RSC Publishing. The Editorial Board Chair for this prestigious new journal will be Distinguished Scientist Dr Mina J. Bissell, Life Sciences Division, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, USA.

Intergrative Biology Journal Cover
Integrative Biology is a unique, highly interdisciplinary journal focused on quantitative multi-scale biology using enabling technologies and tools to exploit the convergence of biology with physics, chemistry, engineering, imaging and informatics.

"New single and multi-scale technologies based in the physical and engineering sciences have had a significant impact driving forward discovery and analysis in most branches of science; yet to date, they have had only a minimal impact and acceptance within the biological sector' said editorial board member Professor David Beebe, University of Wisconsin, USA. 'Therefore, with this new journal our aim is to drive forward this discovery and analysis within biology,

"the integration of technology and quantitation will drive future biological paradigms"
- Dr Mary Helen Barcellos-Hoff
through the quantitative elucidation of basic phenomena and processes that offer fantastic opportunities to: view, interrogate and investigate molecules as well as cells or their contents; model accurately how these processes/systems work; investigate and model complexity; and engineer new solutions to biological problems."

Professor John McCarthy, Manchester Interdisciplinary Biocentre, added, "The focus of this new inter- and multi-disciplinary journal is the utilisation of quantitative technologies, experimental and computational, to characterize biological systems at the molecular and cellular levels."

Integrative Biology Scientific Editor, Dr Mary Helen Barcellos-Hoff from New York University School of Medicine, also commented, "We believe that the integration of technology and quantitation will drive future biological paradigms."

With 12 issues published annually, Integrative Biology will contain a mix of research articles including Full papers, Reviews (Tutorial & Critical), and Perspectives.

From launch, the latest issue of Integrative Biology will be made freely available to all readers via the website. Free institutional access to all 2009/2010 content will be available following a simple registration process. Registration will be available in July 2008.
