STN International

Knowledge is the most important resource in high-tech countries. For research and development, for the daily scientific work, appropriate information - comprehensive and easily accessible - is a fundamental prerequisite. The direct route to scientific information leads via STN International, The Scientific & Technical Information Network. This network is operated cooperatively by FIZ Karlsruhe, the American Chemical Society (ACS), and The Japan Association for International Chemical Information (JAICI). Service Centers in Karlsruhe, Columbus and Tokyo are linked by sea cable (TAT8). Thus, the users have access to one worldwide information service with up-to-date databases in science and technology. The STN centers have many years of experience in the field of scientific information. 

• FIZ Karlsruhe  is the leading information center in the fields of energy, physics, mathematics, and related areas. Since its foundation in 1977, FIZ Karlsruhe has been operating an Online Service Center with bibliographic, numeric, factual and full-text databases. 

• Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS), a division of the American Chemical Society, is the world's principal center for chemical information. Founded in 1907, CAS's best known printed service is Chemical Abstracts (CA), which is recognized as the "Key to the World's Chemical Literature" and forms the basis for the comprehensive CAS databases. 

• The Japan Association for International Chemical Information (JAICI) will from January 2007 assume reponsibility for STN service and support activities in Japan that were previously the responsibility of the Science and Technology Agency, Information Center for Science and Technology (JST). JAICI is a not-for-profit organization for chemical information, actively working on developing and extending the chemical information services. 

With these three scientific organizations in Europe, Japan and the U.S., STN provides an international service for the scientific community and has become the leading information network for science and technology.
