Researcher receives top award
![]()
| Professor William B. Tolman, a Distinguished McKnight University Professor at the University of Minnesota and editorial board member for Dalton Transactions, has been awarded the prestigious Humboldt Research Award. Recognising his lifetime contribution to science, the award is considered among the highest honours given to internationally recognised scholars. The award includes an invitation to carry out research with specialist colleagues in Germany, an invitation that Tolman has gladly accepted. 'I am honoured to have been chosen to receive this award . this is an incredible opportunity for me to expand my scientific horizons and for my wife, children, and I to immerse ourselves in a new culture.' |
Tolman will work at the Technical University of Munich, in Garching, with Professor Wolfgang Hermann, and his group, developing new heterometallic oxidation reagents, as well as on various writing projects.
Tolman's research interests are in the fields of bioinorganic chemistry and polymerization catalysis. In particular, he directs projects aimed at synthetic modelling of metalloprotein active sites and the development of catalysts for the synthesis of biodegradable polymers derived from renewable resource cyclic esters.

New book series on biomolecular science
Structure based drug design, pharmacokinetics and protein-carbohydrate interactions are just three topics to be covered in a forthcoming book series from the RSC.
Due for launch in Spring 2005, the RSC Biomolecular Science Series will provide researchers in the fields of structural biology, drug discovery and biophysical chemistry with authoritative reference works on individual topics, from internationally recognised leaders in the field.
Editor-in-chief, Professor Stephen Neidle, The School of Pharmacy, London will be joined by series editors Dr Simon Campbell, President-elect of the RSC, Dr Marius Clore, National Institutes of Health, US and Professor David Lilley, University of Dundee in identifying and commissioning titles for the series.
Research at the interface between chemistry and biology continues to generate huge interest, and is expanding at a significant rate. This new series demonstrates the RSC's commitment to this new and burgeoning field, and complements existing RSC initiatives such as the Chemical Biology Virtual Journal (a facility showcasing all biologically related works published within RSC Journals) and the activities of the RSC Chemical Biology Forum.

See you at the ACS
This August sees the American Chemical Society host its 228th National Meeting in Philadelphia, US.
A programme of technical symposia, exhibition and social events, attended by chemists from all over the world, make the meeting an essential addition to the RSC calendar.
Staff from both RSC Publishing and Membership departments will be attending the meeting and will be pleased to see you there.
Visit our booth (934, 936 - Aisle 900) for the latest developments in our journals collection including the RSC Journals Archive, and for special discounts on our books.
