Honorary Officers

Gillian Greenway carried out her Ph.D. research at the Department of Instrumentation and Analytical Science, UMIST in the field of trace metal speciation by gas chromatography (GC)- microwave induced plasma (MIP) atomic spectrometry.  In 1985 she became a lecturer at Humberside University before transferring to the Department of Chemistry at the University of Hull in 1988 where she set up a research group working on flow detectors and sensors, on-line sample preparation, separations and environmental trace metal.  In 1996 she was awarded the Royal Society of Chemistry SAC silver medal.She is Professor of Analytical Chemistry at the University of Hull and is working on the miniaturisation of chemical processes and systems for both synthesis and analysis.  Other areas of interest include environmental research and atomic spectrometry.

With a BSc degree in Biochemistry and a PhD in Analytical Chemistry in the UK he moved to study as a Postdoctoral Fellow at Colorado State University. Taking a Senior Lecturer in 1985 at Dublin City University by 1990 became Head of the School of Chemical Sciences and is currently the Dean of the Faculty of Science and Health at Dublin City University. His research interests are in electroanalysis and separation science. He has published over 200 scientific papers and has edited / co-edited three books.

Melissa Hanna-Brown is employed at Pfizer Global R+D Labs in Sandwich as a Lead Separation Scientist for a New Technology Group in Development Science and Technology. She is also a visiting Senior Lecturer in the Department of Pharmacy at King’s College London where she was previously employed as a Lecturer in Separation Sciences. Her PhD studies were carried out between King’s College London and SmithKline Beecham on prediction of drug-biomembrane partitioning. Her postdoctoral research involved developing novel triple-column electrophoretic technology allowing sensitive detection of trace components in complex matrices via 2D-CE. Her interests now include analytical technology development, high resolution strategies for complex biofluid profiling (or metabolomics) and predictive modelling of separations.

Dr Lorraine T Gibson, VP of the Analytical Division 2004-2006 and 2008-2009.  Chair of the AD Groups and Regions Forum 2005-2009. Lorraine Gibson is a lecturer in analytical chemistry at the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow.  Her interests include the development of novel sensors and sorbents for the detection and mitigation of pollutants in indoor air.  Past experiences at the Netherlands Institute for Cultural Heritage and the Getty Conservation Institute also drives her enthusiasm in preventive conservation research and conservation science.  She has developed new web-based teaching material in Analytical Chemistry and is a Registered Practitioner of the Higher Education Academy

Until 2002 John worked for BP Chemicals in Hull managing a section providing both analytical services and analytical research & development. The section was particularly involved in the development and implementation of on-line analytical systems using spectroscopic and chromatographic techniques. John has been involved with the RSC for over 20 years at Local Section and Divisional levels serving in various capacities including Analytical Division President and Local Section Chairman.

Dr Roger Reeve is a senior lecturer in Analytical and Inorganic Chemistry at the University of Sunderland, a position which he has held since 1985. Previous experience included several years in the R and D department of manufacturing company specialising in pollution control equipment. This started his long term interest in environmental analysis. Currently this interest is directed towards analysis of pharmaceuticals in industrial atmospheres and in the wider environment. He has published two books on environmental analysis.

Duncan Thorburn Burns MIRA FRSE, is the Emeritus Professor of Analytical Chemistry at The Queen's University of Belfast and Adjunct Professor at Kasetsart University, Bangkok. His current research interests include both instrumental and reaction chemical analytical procedures for forensic purposes and the history of analytical chemistry in Europe since the sixteenth century.

Ex Officio Members

Roger Wood gained his degree in Chemistry at Hull University and his PhD in analytical chemistry at Imperial College. Roles include working for the Food Standards Agency (previously the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food). His particular interests, besides methods of analysis and sampling, now lie with the quality of analysis, accreditation and proficiency testing of food analysis laboratories. He is co-author of a number International Harmonised Protocol/Guidelines - now cited in legislation. In recognition of his work he was awarded the OBE in 2003.He is currently Chair of the Division's Analytical Methods Committee.
