Organisations Opposed to the Use of Animals in Research

Europeans for Medical Process (EMP)

Europeans for Medical Progress is an independent, not-for-profit organisation of scientists and medical professionals. Their goal is "to protect human health by promoting human-specific medical research". They claim that "there is overwhelming evidence that animal experiments provide results that, when applied to humans, can prove misleading or fatal. These tests exhaust precious research funding, waste valuable time, produce ineffective solutions, and delay progress toward human cures."

British Union for the Abolition of Vivisection (BUAV)

For over 100 years the BUAV has been campaigning peacefully to end animal experiments. Their vision is "to create a world where nobody wants or believes we need to experiment on animals."

National Anti-Vivisection Society (NAVS)

NAVS was formed in 1875 and has been campaigning for the abolition of animal research for over 100 years.

NAVS say that "millions of animals suffer and die in cruel, unscientific, and futile experiments. The NAVS advocates the prohibition of all animal experiments and, pending the achievement of this aim, we may support partial measures of reform which would provide steps towards the abolition of vivisection."

EMP are currently campaigning for "an independent scientific evaluation of animal experimentation."

The BUAV say "we work lawfully and professionally, building relationships with influential people like MP's, MEP's and corporate decision-makers. We also analyse legislation and sit on decision-making panels in the UK, EU and OECD countries, to act as the voice for laboratory animals."

The NAVS group is comprised of four NGOs (non-governmental organisations) working "to end the suffering of animals": the National Anti-Vivisection Society; Animal Defenders International; the Lord Dowding Fund for Humane Research; and the Animal World Show.

The RSPCA's ultimate aim is the replacement of animal experiments with humane alternatives. They say that "until this can be achieved, animals used in research should receive humane and compassionate treatment at all times. The RSPCA therefore campaigns for measures that will help to replace animals, reduce the numbers used, minimise and preferably avoid suffering, and improve welfare."
